Próba montowania dyskietki, którą dostałem od mamy, zakończyła się takim efektem:

tomwys@tom:~$ mount /media/floppy/
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified
tomwys@tom:~$ 

Dodatkowo w logach kernela znalazłem:

FAT: codepage cp437 not found

Rozwiązanie

Chwila googlowania przyniosła efekty. Problem wynikał z braku odpowiedniej konfiguracji kernela. Aby go usunąć przekonfigurowałem kernel:

File systems -> Native Language Support -> [*] Codepage 852 (Central/Eastern Europe)
File systems -> DOS/FAT/NT Filesystems -> (852) Default codepage for FAT

Skompilowałem, zainstalowałem, zrobiłem reboot. Mama mogła już otrzymać swoje upragnione dane.
